Dioceses of Torit's Radio Emmanuel Broadcast Mast Severely Damaged

The broadcast mast before the accident.

On November 22 at 4:15 pm the broadcast mast of Radio Emmanuel was severely damaged during a rain storm when sheet metal roofing on a nearby building was torn off by powerful and hurled toward the mast severing its support wires and causing most of the structure to collapse against the studio building. Only 12 meters of the 60 meter high mast remain standing. Thank God no one was hurt.

This accident comes at a critical time when Radio Emmanuel is doing a lot of coverage and programming related to the coming referendum on the independence of South Sudan on January 9th. Fortunately, with the help and expertise of Comboni Brother Alberto Lomana, antennas were able to be installed on the 12 remaining meters of the mast, but the broadcast range is now limited only to the immediately surrounding area of Torit. Fr. Lounoi Santino, director of Radio Emmanuel, is attempting to raise the nearly US $40,000 that will be necessary to reconstruct the mast and restore the previous broadcasting range.
