Please Pray for Kenya

In just three weeks, on August 4th, Kenyans will vote in a referendum on whether to accept the proposed draft of a new constitution. As the post-election violence two and a half years ago showed, the country is badly in need of a new charter for its government. While the proposed constitution has many good elements, it is seriously flawed in certain respects and its proponents have rejected any attempts to modify it in such a way as to secure broader-based support. The constitution's most serious flaw is an ambiguous statement about abortion that could open the door to legalizing this practice in Kenya. Another difficulty has to do with establishing an Islamic khadi court as part of the civil judicial system. Still others have registered concerns about the uncritical acceptance of aspects of international law that could perhaps pave the way for things like same-sex marriages or civil unions.

The Catholic bishops of Kenya, along with the Kenya Council of Churches and other groups, have urged the electorate to reject the constitution in its present form, and as a result have endured strong criticism from politicians and the secular media.

Please pray that the proposed Kenyan constitution in its present form will be rejected in the upcoming referendum on August 4th, so that Kenya might be spared the scourge of abortion and other social ills that plague the US and Europe.

Hello Father Herald, thank you for bringing us this information. I had no idea, and will indeed pray that Kenya can adopt/formalize more Christian values into its coming constitutional revision.

To lighten the mood a bit, I have a co-worker from Kenya who is from the Luo tribe; the same one as the current President of Kenya, and the current President of the United States. He would often tease me by rubbing his hands together and saying deviously, "The Luo plan for world domination is falling into place nicely."

Lord, thank you for defeating our culture of death. St. Jean-Marie Vianney, please intercede and pray for us on this, your feast day. St. Francis, please intercede and pray for us.

God bless,
