The conference at Namugongo ended on Sunday, July 12th. The following day we travelled 50 km north of Kampala to Emmaus Center in Katikamu, the site of the Catholic Institute for Discipleship and Evangelization for a week long training course in leadership for Catholic youth.
Emmaus center has beautiful grounds which, together with its newly constructed chapel, reminded me of Casa Guadalupe mission center in Comayagua, Honduras.
The course was conducted by an international team from the US, England, Ireland and Scotland. The program included morning prayer, evening Mass, and included sessions introducing the Scriptures, presenting God’s plan for sexuality, and dealing with principles for effective leadership. The combined experience of the charismatic conference and the week of leadership training was amazing and overwhelmingly positive for the Sudanese youth, and really expanded the horizons of their minds and hearts with regard to Jesus, the Church and mission. There is a close up of three of the young people from Sudan clapping, dancing and singing at the beginning of one of the sessions.
We took advantage of the proximity of Kampala to make several trips into the city for supplies and equipment that are either unavailable or else very expensive in Sudan. I was very pleasantly surprised to see billboards promoting marital fidelity as part of a campaign to reduce HIV/AIDS. Uganda has one of the most successful abstinence/fidelity based AIDS prevention programs in the world. We were also able to visit the cathedral, which sits atop a hill overlooking the city one evening.
