I just received the two photos above from Bishop Akio Johnson Mutek of Torit. The man shown is the only survivor of seven elderly people in the Chorokol and Lodwara area who were suffering from severe malnutrition. Apparently the other villagers had gone out to scavange for food while these seven remained behind. This man was somehow able to make it to a police post (where the photos were taken) to get help. The other six died. It puts a face on the desperate and life-threatening situation many people are facing right now in that region. Tragically, the threat of hunger will continue until steady rains return and a successful crop of staple foods are harvested, which will likely not happen until next year.
I have been heartened by the messages from many of you who have asked how you can help. I am in contact with the bishop and the diocese in the process of devising a way to respond to this crisis.
