I continue to make the trek to Katire on those Sundays that I'm in Torit, and last Sunday was no exception. The folliage of the village was especially lush after a recent rainfall. The children are always the most beautiful and fascinating to watch, though, including these boys who came early to church and sat together in the front row while we were preparing for Mass.
Under the direction of Dennis Kiyimba, the youth who accompany us on these Sunday visits have begun to prepare evangelization and catechetical skits. Their debut was well received by the local congregation.
Our visit there last weekend had a shadow of sadness to it, though. A young construction worker from Katire who's helping out on a building project for the diocese in Torit often joins us on these Sunday trips to visit his family in the village. When we arrived last Sunday he found out that his sister, Kasina, had just died the day before from a complication related to her pregnancy. Tragically such occurances are not uncommon in rural villages with poor access to health care and transportation. We offered Sunday Mass for Kasina and our prayers and sympathy to her brother. Please remember her, and the many like her, in your prayers.
