On our way to pick up some Bibles from a local Evangelical missionary couple, Russ and Lynn Noble (Russ is originally from Long Island and Lynn from Kent, England; they met here in Sudan where they have both served for a number of years) we came across a jubilant Lotuko procession with young people in traditional dress, their heads and faces whitened with powder (a sign of joy), waving flags and blowing whistles. They came out of a side street just in front of us, marched a little way down the main road, then turned onto another side street. Some occasion worth celebrating, such as the betrothal of a couple, must have just taken place.
As an aside, the average high temperature here in Torit from mid-February to mid-March was 99 degrees. That means on occasion it was hotter here. Now with the arrival of the rains, it's begun to cool off a little to the average high temperature in early February: 98 degrees.
