An online CNN article I referred to in a post earlier this week, Fragile peace may unravel in Southern Sudan, mentioned some facts about the country that are worth highlighting:
· Southern Sudan is approximately the size of the country of France or the state of Texas, but has only 30 miles of paved roads.
· During the north-south civil war that lasted 21 years, 2 million people died and 4 million were displaced.
· More people died this year in tribal conflicts in the South than in the embattled region of Darfur in western Sudan.
· Nine out of ten people in Southern Sudan live on less than $1 a day.
· A 15 year old girl in Southern Sudan is more likely to die in childbirth than finish school.
· This year famine has left a million Southern Sudanese dependent on emergency food supplies.
