Madi Mission: Nimule 3

We had a quiet morning on Thursday to recoup our strength for the final evening of the mission and the youth retreat that begins on Friday. That didn't stop me from snapping a photo of this small flock of turkeys being raised on the parish grounds - another one of those unexpected African surprises.

The momentum continued to build and reach a high point on the final day. Josh Dart (above) gave a very practical talk on how to put our faith into daily practice and survive as a Christian in a sometimes hostile world. He asked for help from this young man, and used a clean t-shirt to illustrate how when our soul is clean from Confession, we want to try to keep it clean. But when it's already dirty, it doesn't matter much to us if we add another stain.

All the stops were pulled out for the closing Mass, which means that these young ladies accompanied the various processions in the liturgy (entrance, offertory, recessional and here the presentation of the Word of God) with traditional African dancing.

By the time the evening was over more than a thousand people had gathered to watch a film on the life of Sudanese Saint Josephine Bakhita. We distributed 1250 holy cards with her photo. I referred to St. Bakhita in the homily as someone who shows us what God can do in a human life, even in the wake of horrible suffering, when we say yes to him.
