Tragically, last Wednesday, August 4th, the draft version of a new constitution for Kenya was passed by a referendum vote of approximately 67% in favor and 33% opposed. The constitution contains an ambiguous reference to abortion that could open the door to the legalization of that practice in the country. Christian leaders in the country, both Catholic and Protestant, strongly opposed the draft in its present form and urged that it be revised.
A friend from Kenya recently wrote me, commenting on the situation:
"Yes, the Constitution passed and some how the real struggle starts now because as the Cardinal [John Njue] put it, the Church will continue to fight for the Truth and the Truth is not equal to numbers. We pray for the Church in Kenya especially the Bishops so that Christ may sustain us all in the struggle... This circumstance calls for the conversion of each of us."
