As construction and repairs on the residence and the chapel at the House of Mercy finally approach (please, God) completion, the St. Daniel Comboni Missionary Youth volunteered to help clean up the property. This past Saturday morning about a dozen youth showed up with "slashers" (scythes) and began to cut a path through from the street to the rear car gate. The cut grass revealed lots of scrap metal, garbage and even skins and entrails from animals that had been butchered and skinned nearby - all of which was collected and piled.
There was lots of work inside the compound, too, in the form of more grass to cut, construction scraps and some very heavy pieces of machinery left from decades ago when the property housed a grinding mill. One of the pieces weighed several hundred pounds and took almost all of us (together with pushing, pulling and using leverage) to move.
The end result was beautiful, though: a clear driveway and a clean compound. After sodas and snacks the youth from the group practiced a skit about the coming of the missionaries to Sudan that they will perform next Sunday at the celebration of St. Daniel Comboni Day at the local parish in Torit.
