While the mission team was evangelizing in Torit a letter was passed on to me from the Catholic Community in Chahari, one of the locations where we distributed relief grain. At the decision of the leaders of the community the grain was given in exchange for making and laying bricks for the construction of a small chapel. I reproduce the text of the letter here as closely as possible to the way it was written:
Chahari Chapel
Lomohidan North Payam
Ikotos County, Eastern Equatoria State
15 April 2010
To the Father in Charge
Catholic Diocese of Torit
Relief Program
Dear Father,
The Christian Community of Chahari Chapel are very glad to passed all their greetings to the Father in charge for the help of sorghum they have received from the month of February, and through that help the Christians Community of Chahari Lomohidan North Payam decided to lay bricks over the sorghum given by the father in charge instead of giving for consumption.
More so, the Christians community of Chahari lay bricks and they have burnt three big group (kemena) through the sorghum they have received from the father in charge Catholic Diocese of Torit Relief Program. The Christians Community of Chahari are all wishing good service for the help and may God continue to strengthen your heart for the good of the Christians communities in our state and all over the world.
Thanks
Yours Sincerely Christians Community Secretary
Otto Pasquale Lelang
We were also able to make arrangements for the delivery of an additional 11 tons of hunger relief food to Chukudum, where the visiting mission team evangelized three weeks ago. The delivery coincided with the celebration of the parish's patronal feast: the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and so was a gift from the Heart of Christ to those suffering from hunger there. Jesus feeds their hearts with His own Heart in the Eucharist, and their bodies with this gift of food.
Although there were not enough funds donated to cover the cost of this food, we squeezed the money out of the general mission account, sure that feeding the starving is a paramount priority and something desired by the Lord. Thanks to those who donated for this purpose, and to anyone else who still might like to help defray this expense.
