Last week the international Catholic relief organization, Caritas, held a two-day meeting in Rome with Church leaders from Sudan. Some of the information presented at that conference include the following statistics:
· 16% of the population of South Sudan is malnoursihed
· 9 out of 10 people in the South live on less than $1 a day
· In 2007 the region had the highest maternal mortality rate in the world: 203 women dying for every 10,000 births.
Bishop Edward Kussala of Tombura-Yambio stated: "There is an ongoing humanitarian crisis. People don't have access to healt care, education, water and protection from high levels of violence."
