Evangelizing in Chukudum

Tuesday afternoon in the church.

We spend two days doing Eucharistic evangelization in Chukudum. Because of the threat of rain in the late afternoon (a threat that was made good by a brief downpour at one point) we began the program Tuesday in the church with songs, prayers and interaction with the crowd.

On both days there was a catechetical skit to mark the transition to two brief talks. On Tuesday the themes were the Person of Jesus and the Holy Eucharist followed by a Eucharistic Holy Hour and healing service that included a reflection on mercy and forgiveness. On Wednesday the talks focused on Following Jesus, the Church and Our Lady, followed by a Mass with a homily that presented St. Bakhita as a special example, patron and intercessor for the Sudanese.

On Tuesday we distributed rosaries to those who attended, on Wednesday a holy card with an actual photo of St. Bakhita. Both evenings ended with an outdoor video presentation (illuminated by a full moon): first the life of Jesus, and second a dramatized account of the life of St. Bakhita.

Although both videos were lengthy and in English (which most of those in attendance did not understand) nearly a thousand people stood almost motionless through to the end.
